42nd Denver Film Festival
31 October - 10 November 2019
Opening Night
It was a big night for local hero Rian Johnson, who made a record third Opening Night appearance at the Denver Film Festival. The recipient of this year's John Cassavetes Award, Johnson also presented his latest movie, Knives Out.
The guy is nice. Remarkably nice, completely unaffected by having directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi. He's approachable and ready with great answers to whatever questions are thrown his way.
Given all the challenges faced by the Star Wars brand lately (the production setbacks and underperformance of Solo put standalone adventures on hold while David Benioff and D.B. Weiss recently walked away from creating a whole new series), what's up with Johnson's new trilogy? He simply says it's up to Uncle Walt.
When asked about advice for aspiring filmmakers, he offered the following three tips:
- Keep making your movies with friends or whoever you can get ahold of.
- Keep watching movies — not just in theatres, stream or rent the classics and foreign films in order to get exposure to film history and diversity.
- Keep living your life — your movies will be informed by your own travels, daily grind, relationships, etc.
