U2: Elevation Tour
Continental Airlines Arena
East Rutherford, New Jersey
21 June 2001
I was number 53 in the badly water-logged GA line.
This was the night of my second photo pass. There were a lot of professional photogs in the media pit - one of them from Rolling Stone, but I didn't get to track down who it was in particular. I also spoke with a guy from Germany, who works for another U2 fan site.
This is also the show that I, this kid from Denver, got to give Bono the "thumbs up" as he "posed" for me while lying on the catwalk during Until the End of the World! Yeah! What a moment! Crazy, Man, Crazy! After the song, I packed up the gear and looked up while I was exiting. Bono was looking down on me, smiling! I tried to snap a picture with my Canon Rebel, but the media woman was too quick and blocked my lens with her papers. She was just doing her job. And I have an AWESOME memory of that moment!
Bono commented that they just got done doing to "warm up shows" in New York. The crowd went nuts!
The amazing thing about what they've done with the Elevation tour is that there are so many excellent and different vantage points from which to take in the show. It's a show that begs to be seen over and over and over... And until you've seen, you just can't understand!
In the audience: Baz Luhrmann, director of Moulin Rouge - Bono dedicated Stay to him and referenced the Moulin Rouge in the song's lyrics. Bono also commented on how you have to experiment in order to keep things fresh, and once again said, "out there, you'll find a lot of interesting shit."
All in all, a very similar set to the first night in New York.
I heard something about how Naomi had arrived while I was putting my camera gear in the media woman's office (back stage stuff! cool beans!). I think that might have been Naomi Campbell, but I could be wrong...
Bono thanked "Father Bruce for lending us the hall tonight!" The Edge caught the humor in that and laughed... Apparently The Boss was at one of the NY shows, I'm just not sure which exact one. Winona Ryder and Tiger Woods were also among the celebs who took in one of the NY/NJ shows, according to Rolling Stone.
