U2: Elevation Tour
Earl's Court
London, England
18 August 2001
(Editor's Comment: Pardon the sloppy condition of these notes. Documentation was lost during the travels and these notes are being rebuilt from scraps and memory.)
I missed the opener, Kelis, because there was a huge queue at the box office to pick up tickets. Further making things miserable, I could only pick up my ticket for that night's show. In order to get the ticket for the show on the 22nd, I'll have to do it all over again on the 22nd.
See you… EU (Duncan Smith reference)
I lived around the corner from Earl's Corner, two minutes from here, above the Prince of Wales pub. Had a pre-show pint of Guinness at the old haunt.
Now, U2's playing Earls Court, in my old "backyard.' Bono comments that it's a dream come true for them. They used to live just down the street.
Wake Up Dead Man
Bad
did not play Pride
Civil Disobedience
New York - Bono stands holding microphone like Lady Liberty
According to Bono, The Edge learned how to sleep standing up
London went off on PopMart
Bono's chit chat: He seemed to get lost in his own thoughts. Not surprising, since his father is seriously ill and he's been commuting to Dublin after each show.
Stuck in a Moment
Bono commented in retrospect his father actually wrote Kite for him, not the other way around
Bono: Lemon / Heart - you need both in life
Bullet the Blue Sky: US, UK, France, China, Russia - the five permanent members of UN Security Council are also the five largest arms dealers
Light show on large black wall behind the stage, no seats there; it's a cavernous and plain arena
I was starting to feel sick, maybe all the running around was finally wearing me down and maybe I was starting to lose the plot. But, by the end of the show I truly felt rejuvenated.
Unfortunately, there was no time for an after show pint; had to catch a train to High Wycombe. Jogged over to S. Kensington station, avoiding mass congestion at Earls Court, then took Piccadilly to Green Park. After that, shot up to Baker St. on the Jubilee Line and jogged over to Marylebone.
