7 April 2017
Ah. Opening Day.
I've managed to maintain quite a streak. I've been to Opening Day somewhere every year since 1993, when the Colorado Rockies held their very first Opening Day at the old Mile High Stadium. On sundry Opening Days I've seen sun, snow, rain, wind, hot, cold, the whole panoply during that time.
Well, there is one asterisk in the record book. Back on Opening Day 2008, at old Yankee Stadium, I was there, at my seat and patiently waiting through a rain delay. The game was ultimately postponed to the following evening. Bummer #1: On the way back into Manhattan, the skies parted and there was nothing but blue sky. Bummer #2: I was en route to Cairo, Egypt, the next day and was unable to attend the rescheduled game.
Nolan Arenado received a bevy of awards during pre-game celebrations: a Gold Glove Award, a Defensive Player of the Year Award and a Silver Slugger Award. Here he's seen with the Rockies' new manager, Bud Black.
Kyle Freeland, a Denver native, pitches a win against the Dodgers. It's his Major League debut and a rarity: making a debut at the home Opening Day. The last time that specific combination happened was back on April 19, 1966.

The snow is right where it belongs: on the Rocky Mountains, not on the Colorado Rockies baseball club.
Rox win! A 2-1 victory over last season's division champs, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
